PATCHMASTER 2.05 |
New Features |
| Trace Buffer | PATCHMASTER 2.05 implements 4 "trace buffers" which can be used for "trace arithmetic's" (adding, subtracting or averaging of traces), for "Online Averaging" and for displaying a "Reference Trace". |
| Software LockIn | A „Manual Calibration“ mode has been implemented to let the user set the „Phase Angle“ and „Attenuation“ of the LockIn himself instead of using the "Automatic Calibration". |
| Pulse Generator | The AD channel „MUX“ lets the user sample the Imon-1 signal (current signal after filter 1) of the active amplifier. |
| ToolTips | In the Help menu of PATCHMASTER, it is now possible to activate "ToolTips". This function displays a short description of the main PATCHMASTER functions whenever the mouse is moved over the corresponding button. |
| Trace Properties dialog | The trace properties (show, vector, marker type) can now be set in a dialog. This does not only make the handling of the trace properties more convenient, it also allows to set these parameters from a macro. |
| List of used analysis functions | The new option "List" in the analysis window lists all functions to the notebook, recursively naming the operand functions as well. |
| New protocol editor commands |
Several new protocol editor commands have been implemented: "Chain Protocol" allow starting another protocol
from the running protocol. That way, it is possible to use short protocols as "sub-routines" and to call
this routines from other protocols. The "Trace Buffer" command gives access to the new trace buffer functions and the "Replay" command allows automation of data analysis. The new parameter "=input" of the "Set Value" command prompts the user to enter a number, which then is assigned to a "value". The "PGF template" parameter of the "Acquire Series" command can now be inserted into the protocol script via a popup list. |
| New batch control commands | The "Batch control function" can be used to control PATCHMASTER from another application (see PATCHMASTER manual). We added the new commands "SetComment"" and "GetComment" for writing and reading of comments via batch control. The command "WriteToTermIO" is used to turn on or off the logging of batch control communication to the notebook. The command "GetParameters" has been extended by the parameters "DataFile", "OnlineFile", "PgfFile", and "ProtocolFile" for reading the file names of actually opened files. |
|
|
Bug Fixes |
| Protocol Editor: WAIT command | In the protocol editor it was not possible to insert a WAIT command. If one tried, then an "END Repeat" line was inserted, which could not be deleted. The "Write Icon Value" command was not accessible, too - FIXED. |
| Moving online analysis method | Moving an online analysis method to an empty place crashed Patchmaster - FIXED. |
| Testing the amplifier | The FULL TEST always reported errors in "Rs comp tau", although the tested amplifier was o.k. (EPC 10 and EPC 9 amplifiers). If the tested amplifier was an EPC 10, then two additional errors were reported for "CCStepResponse" and "ExtCCStim" - FIXED. |
| "Overlay Sweeps" in the oscilloscope window | During data acquisition , the sweeps of a series were not overlayed although "Overlay" was on. This error occured only in continuous redraw mode (sweep duration > 1000ms) and if the STORE button was active - FIXED |
| Amplifier command: switching amplifiers | If an Double or Triple amplifier is used, then the "Amplifier" command of the protocol editor can be used for switching amplifiers. This did not work - FIXED. |
| Continuous recording and "No Online Analysis" | If a continuous protocol with several sweeps was started, then only the first sweep was executed if the analysis mode was set to "No Online Analysis" - FIXED. |
| Online window is not always updated | With the option "Auto after Sweep", the graph was only updated, if the just analysed data point required a re-scaling of the axis - FIXED. |
| Notebook: "Clear when Saved" does not work with "Auto Store" | "Clear when Saved" did not work with "Auto Store". Upon closing a file, the notebook was stored, but not cleared - FIXED. |
| CCGain parameter in Parameter dialog is wrong | The Current Clamp Gain value (EPC 9 and EPC 10 amplifiers) was not correctly stored in the Parameter window - FIXED. |
|
Known Bugs |
|
| Second LIH-1600 unit is not detected | If two EPC 10 amplifiers (or two LIH 1600 interfaces) are connected to the same PCI-16 board, then only the first unit is detected by the software. |
| "Test Pulse" command breaks REPEAT loop | The "Test Pulse" command of the protocol editor breaks a REPEAT loop. If the "Test Pulse" command is used within such a loop, then the protocol suddenly stops after a few loops. |
| Parameter "Seal Resistance" is not updated | The parameter "Seal Resistance" from the parameters dialog is not updated between 2 consecutive series. It is only updated, if the amplifier was brought to front. |
| Protocol editor: Trace Buffer command | The parameters of the "Trace Buffer" command are not properly read from a stored *.pro file, if both - source and destination - are a buffer (not a trace). |
| Protocol editor: parsing of "IF .. THEN" command paramters |
The parameters of the IF .. THEN command might be wrongly interpreted. For example, the command line IF ( 0.000s): SweepCount = 30.000 in a protocol file is wrongly interpreted as IF ( 0.000s): SweepCount > 0.000 |
| ITC-18/EPC10+: Range of ITC-18 AD inputs cannot be changed | The input range of the ITC-18 ADs cannot be changed in the amplifier dialog. The setting always goes back to the default setting "+/- 10V". |
| Continuous recording and "Set Last Segment Amplitude" | If "Set Last Segment Amplitude" is used in a PGF sequence, then a continuous segment is always set to the holding of the last "non-continuous" segment. |

PATCHMASTER 2.03 |
Bug Fixes |
| Series comment | The "Series Comment" control in the Parameters dialog was not updated upon switching from one series to another. It was updated only, if the Parameters dialog was closed and re-opened - FIXED. |
| BREAK and triggered PGF sequences | A triggered PGF sequence could not be stopped by clicking on BREAK (while the PGF was waiting for the next trigger) if "Cont. Redraw" was on - FIXED. |
| BREAK does not immediately stop acquisition | If a series with a sweep interval >0 was run, and one clicked on the BREAK button within the sweep interval period, then the acquisition was not stopped before the sweep interval was finished - FIXED. |
| ITC-18 not incrementing | The initialization of an ITC-18 interface failed with the error message: "ITC-18 error: USB communication error" or "ITC-18 error: not incrementing. Please, check power and connections" (Windows only) - FIXED. |
| "Export Full Sweeps" and continuous traces | Exporting continuous data to IgorPro with "Export Full Sweeps" only exported "Max Sample Points" instead of the full sweep - FIXED. |

PATCHMASTER 2.02 |
New Features |
| Revised LIH driver | Important note: The driver libraries have been revised. Therefore, an EPC driver update is required. The driver can be downloaded from our website. |
| ITC-18 interface | Important note: Windows users should not update to this version, if they are using an ITC-18. Under Windows the ITC-18 is not properly supported! |
| Bridge Balance | The "Bridge Balance" mode of EPC 9 and EPC 10 amplifiers has been improved. |
| Macro recording | PATCHMASTER will now alert the user before leaving the program, when the macros were changed. |
| PGF: "Toggle Mode" | The new amplitude increment mode "Toggle" has been added. It will toggle the amplitude increment between positive and negative amplitude, e.g., +10mV, -10mV, +20mV, -20mV, etc. |
| Export mode: "Trace Time relative to Timer" | The export option "Trace Time relative to Timer" was modified. Now the trace time will be the exact timer time at time of sweep start (as seconds since last midnight). |
|
Bug Fixes |
|
| Continuous Recording | Some bugs related to the new continuous aquisition and continuous redraw mode have been fixed. |
| Wrong oscilloscope "page" | After acquiring more than one sweep, the "page" in the oscilloscope would be beyond the valid sweep length, resulting in no data being displayed until the display was reset - FIXED |
| Amplifier "clipping" state | The "clipping" state was not stored in the data file. There is ONE amplifier record per series and amplifier. Thus, clipping could not be stored on a per sweep base. Now, the clipping information is stored on a trace level. Thus, the amplifier "clipping" field was removed. Clipping is now shown in the "amplifier" field of a trace: If the string "CLIP" is displayed, clipping did occur during the recording. If that string is missing, no clipping was detected. |
| Export to PULSE | Converting long continuous traces to PULSEv8x6 format could crash the program - FIXED. |
| Status of digital out | The status of the digital output bits in the I/O control dialog were not updated after an acquisition - FIXED. |
| Hidden control | The "Show Digital In" control in the configuration dialog was hidden by another control - FIXED. |
|
Known Bugs |
|
| Series comment | The "Series Comment" control in the Parameters dialog is not updated upon switching from one series to another. It is updated only, if the Parameters dialog is closed and re-opened. |
| BREAK and triggered PGF sequences | A triggered PGF sequence cannot be stopped by clicking on BREAK (while the PGF is waiting for the next trigger) if "Cont. Redraw" is on. |
| BREAK does not immediately stop acquisition | If a series with a sweep interval >0 is run, and one clicks on the BREAK button within the sweep interval period, then the acquisition is not stopped before the sweep interval is finished. |
| ITC-18 not incrementing | The initialization of an ITC-18 interface failes with the error message: "ITC-18 error: USB communication error" or "ITC-18 error: not incrementing. Please, check power and connections" (Windows only). |
| "Export Full Sweeps" and continuous traces | Exporting continuous data to IgorPro with "Export Full Sweeps" only exports "Max Sample Points" instead of the full sweep. |
| Moving online analysis method | Moving an online analysis method to an empty place crashes PatchmasterPro. |

PATCHMASTER 2.0 |
New Features |
| Revised LIH driver | Important note: The libraries for the communication with LIH1600 / EPC10 have been revised. Therefore, a driver update is required, if an EPC 10 or a LIH 1600 is used. The driver can be downloaded from our website. |
| Continuous Acquisition | The continuous acquisition mode can be used for "gap free" acquisition over several minutes or even hours. |
| Continuous Display | The just acquired data is now displayed instantly in the oscilloscope screen and not after the complete sweep is finished. |
| "Nice numbers" in Online Analysis | One can now select in "Modify Axis" that the axis ranges are set to the nearest "nice" values. |
| Individual scaling for all DACs | One can now specify a scaling factor for every DAC, e.g. the stimulus scaling factor for a DAC connected to the stimulus input of an additional amplifier. If in the PGF "use StimScale" is set for a DAC which is not a stimulus DAC of an amplifier, the DAC scaling factor is used to scale up the output. |
| PRINT button in Online Analysis |
The new "Print" button in the Online Analysis dialog will print the analysis windows as displayed. Note: parametric plots (traces) will only draw the traces of the series presently selected in the tree. |
| Multiple Solution Handling | With an EPC Double or Triple amplifier, one can use one pair of solutions for each amplifier. To activate that, one has to select the option "Show Amplifier Solutions" in the Configuration window (active only for EPC Double and Triple). There will be an additional pop-up menu to select the amplifier for which the solutions are to be assigned. The solutions for each amplifier are stored as one pair of values for each Series. |
| New Export modes |
One can now define, how the time of trace data is defined, when exporting to ASCII, IGOR, and MatLab.
The 4 options are:
|
| Additional amplification of the V-mon output |
A new control in the EPC10 window ("V-mon x 100") allows amplifying the voltage monitor
output by an additional factor of 10 (total of 100), giving better resolution of the voltage trace
(for example for field potential measurements). Please note: This feature is only available with "EPC 10 Rev. F" amplifiers. |
| File Bundling | The File Bundling (see PATCHMASTER 1.20) is now set by default. As a consequence, only one PATCHMASTER data file is created (with the extension *.dat). |
| I vs V (theoretical) | The new analysis function "Stimulus" allows to generate a theoretical trace of the stimulus. This can be used to plot a recorded current trace versus its theoretical stimulus ("instantaneous IV"). |
| Cursor handling | The "Cursors" button is no longer displayed in the Oscilloscope window. Its activation was moved to the analysis window. A click on that control will bring the Oscilloscope window to the front, and the cursors can be set. |
|
Bug Fixes |
|
| Telegraphing amplifiers - Lookup Table | The lookup table for the bandwidth telegraphing was not stored with the configuration. After starting PATCHMASTER, one had to re-load the lookup table in the configuration dialog to get the bandwidth telegraphing to work - FIXED |
| Storing of parameters | The parameters "Seal resistance" and "Pipette Resistance" were not stored with the data file if an EPC amplifier was used - FIXED |
| Printing of Online Analysis | The Online Analysis of PATCHMASTER allows displaying raw data traces. Those graphs could be printed. If more than one graph was plotted, the sequence of the graphs was reversed in the print-out - FIXED |
| EPC 8 and EPC 10 | The EPC 8 could not be used with the built-in interface of the EPC 10. A communication error was reported - FIXED |
| "Ext Stim. Input" could not be turned on. | After setting the Ext. Stim Scaling of the EPC 9 / EPC 10 to "0" (in Current Clamp mode), it was no longer possible to turn on the "Ext Stim. Input" in the amplifier dialog - FIXED |
| "Copy and Paste" to other applications | On Windows computers, "copy and paste" from the PATCHMASTER notebook to other applications did not work - FIXED |
| Online Analysis: Update of graphs | If the same series was replayed twice, then the online analysis graphs were not plotted the second time - FIXED |
| Online Analysis: 1st analysis function must not be a "Trace" parameter | If the first analysis function of an analysis method was a "trace" parameter, then the analysis graphs were not properly plotted - FIXED |
| Separators in the Notebook (Copy and Paste) | The "ASCII Text Format" settings of the "Replay" menu are used for the Notebook as well. This enables e.g. to directly "cut-and-paste" to spread sheets requiring a TAB separator, such as Microsoft Excel. However, this did not work - FIXED. |

PATCHMASTER 1.20 |
New Features |
| Support for Solutions | The option "Windows -> Solution Base" give access to the Solutions window, which allows Creating, editing, storing, and reloading a Solution Data Base. Selecting the internal and external solutions can be made in the IOControl window |
| File Types | The file selector under MacOS (Carbon) has now a pop-up menu which allows to select, whether files with the expected file types are to be selectable, or files with any type (selection "All Documents"). A new option "Set File Type" in the File menu allows to set the correct file types of single files or all known files in a directory. |
| Digital bits when using a standalone ITC-16 | One can now set 14 bits (bit 0..13) instead of the previous 8 bits, when one selects an ITC-16 standalone as the AD-board. |
| Starting PATCHMASTER with various configurations | On Windows systems, one can now start PATCHMASTER by double-clicking on a particular configuration file ("[any file name].set") when PATCHMASTER is registered for the "set" extension (right mouse click on data file -> dialog "Open With" => checkbox "Always use this program to open this file"). This works even when the configuration file is named differently than "PatchMaster.set" ! |
| New analysis option "Reversal" | The new analysis option "Reversal" searches for the zero crossing of the target trace. It computes the corresponding voltage either from the theoretical stimulus (make only sense when the segment is a ramp), or from the voltage at the corresponding position of another, specified trace. |
| File Bundling | A new data file format has been added: all files generated for a data set (raw data, "pgf" and "pul" trees, etc.) are combined into one file, when the option "Make Bundle Files" in the configuration window is checked. |
|
Bug Fixes |
|
| Test DAC | The Test DAC would be reset after one switched from low to medium and medium to high gain range. Fixed: the previous voltage is restored. |
| EPC 8 Remote mode | If an EPC 8 amplifier (Remote mode) is controlled via an ITC-18 interface, the scaling of the oscilloscope was not adopted upon changing the amplifier gain. This results in wrong current readings in the oscilloscope screen. FIXED ! |
| Export to MatLab | Exported MatLab files could not be opened by MatLab. FIXED ! |
| Lookup Tables | The lookup table for the gain telegraphing was not stored with the configuration. After starting PATCHMASTER, one had to re-load the lookup table in the configuration dialog to get the gain telegraphing to work. FIXED ! |
| CC Gain Limits | In CC mode, it was not possible to inject currents > 10nA, even with a CC-Gain of 100pA/mV. FIXED ! |
|

| EPC 8 and EPC 10 | The EPC 8 cannot be used with the built-in interface of the EPC 10. A communication error is reported. |
| "Ext Stim. Input" cannot be turned on. | After setting the Ext. Stim Scaling of the EPC 9 / EPC 10 to "0" (in Current Clamp mode), it is no longer possible to turn on the "Ext Stim. Input" in the amplifier dialog. |
| "Copy and Paste" to other applications | On Windows computers, "copy and paste" from the PATCHMASTER notebook to other applications does not work. |
| Online Analysis: Update of graphs | If the same series is replayed twice, then the online analysis graphs are not plotted the second time. |
| Online Analysis: 1st analysis function must not be a "Trace" parameter | If the first analysis function of an analysis method is a "trace" parameter, then the analysis graphs are not properly plotted. |

PATCHMASTER 1.11 |
New Features |
| Revised LIH driver | Important note: The libraries for the communication with LIH1600/EPC10 have been revised. Therefore, a driver update is required, if an EPC 10 or a LIH 1600 is used. The driver can be downloaded from our website. |
| PGF Parameters | Please note: The indexing of the PGF parameters has been changed: in the new version the first parameter has index "1", while in earlier versions the parameters started at "0". PGF templates, using those parameters, should be adapted. |
| Analysis Dongle | Support of the PATCHMASTER analysis dongle. The analysis dongle allows analysis of PATCHMASTER data files, but no data acquisition. |
| LockIn amplifier | The software LockIn amplifier for Cm measurements is now fully implemented. If a Double or Triple amplifier is used, membrane capacitance measurements can be performed simultaneously with two (or three) amplifiers. |
| "LockIn" Protocol Event | The new Protocol Event "LockIn" allows to modify LockIn parameters. |
| AUX Gain | In the configuration dialog of PATCHMASTER individual scaling factors for each free AD input can be set (gain telegraphing is supported). Gain telegraphing for an attached EPC 8 amplifier is also supported. |
| Bridge Balance in CC | The "bridge balance" of the current clamp amplifier has been improved. Now it is possible to compensate R-series up to 100% (limited by the actual voltage output compliance). The "bridge balance" is a technique for eliminating voltage drops caused by the current injected down the patch pipette. |
| EPC menu parameters | All parameters set in the EPC drop-down menu are now stored in the configuration file as well. |
| New "Print" command | The 2 menu options "Print" and "Print Marked Target & Children" have been added. This function makes a printout of the displayed traces and of the corresponding Online Analysis results (if available). |
| Trace Properties | The new "Trace properties" allow to set display options (e.g. marker type) for each individual trace. |
| AutoCFast and AutoCSlow | The result of AutoCFast and AutoCSlow (success or failure) is now stored with the amplifier state. |
| Trace Math (Build Instruction) | In the PGF editor the new "TraceMath" function has been implemented. With "TraceMath" a virtual trace can be calculated from other traces. Traces can be added, subtracted or scaled. One application for "TraceMath" is the "background" subtraction in fluorescence measurements, |
| Auto Filename Generation | File names can be automatically generated out of a set of components, for example [DATE], [TIME], [000], (or <DATE>, <TIME>, <000>) and so on .... Example: user_<DATE>_<000> |
| Array of Values | Online Analysis results can be stored on a static array (with 16 elements). The IF-Event in the protocol editor can now make decisions based on the stored values. |
| Copy and Paste | Copy and Paste can now be used to copy text from or paste text into PATCHMASTER controls, for example to the "Comment" edit box. |
| Timing of Protocol Editor | The timing of the "Acquire Each Sweep" command in the Protocol Editor has be revised. To have a "Each Sweep" repeat loop keeping the repeat time as set by the "SweepInterval" (while executing protocol events such as AutoCSlow), increase the "Minimum Wait Time" to include enough time to cover the time needed to execute those events. The "Minimum Wait Time" can be set in the Configuration window, and in the protocol event "Acquire Properties". |
| Export of Stimulus Templates | The new "Export Trace" function can be used to export traces as "Stimulus Templates". By use of those "Stimulus Templates" one can stimulate any complex pulse pattern. One can even stimulate with a prerecorded voltage trace such as an action potential. |
| More Analysis functions | Additional analysis functions have been added to the Online Analysis, for example the user defined parameters "User 1" and "User 2". |
| Extended Protocol Editor commands | The syntax of several Protocol Editor commands have been extended in order to make the Protocol Editor even more versatile. |
| Photometry |
The Data Compression feature and the MathTrace (Build Instruction) of the pgf Editor allow e.g. online processing of
high resolution photometry data. Photometry data recorded from a single emission ratio dye such as fura-2 can be
separated in two traces. The extended Online Analysis allows flexible processing of photometry data for various methods such as single wavelength, single emission ratio, dual emission recordings etc. |
|
Bug Fixes |
|
| Macros menu | The Macros menu got disabled, when one switched from EPC10 to EPC9 in the configuration dialog - FIXED ! |
